Mindfulness & ACT For Parents, Families & Individuals

Anxiety, worry and other forms of emotional stress affect who we are as people and as parents. Most of us want to learn how to live better versions of ourselves but don’t know how. Time pressures, demands from work, increasing pressure from school, have added to the stress and overwhelm we feel on a daily basis.

Our brains have an inherent negativity bias – we tend to focus on the negatives in our life – and with the addition of stress, the brain’s neural networks fragment and this leads to mental and emotional exhaustion.
“Survival has wired our brains to be like Velcro for suffering, but like Teflon for Happiness”*

Mind wandering, a cost of our busy society, has a detrimental effect on our brains. Research now shows that this move to auto pilot and multi-tasking can block happiness. A study from Harvard shows that the default mode network operates in a large proportion of individuals up to 47% of the time!**

The neuroscience of stress and awareness and attention training have begun to converge – these practices have been likened to aerobic exercise for the brain – and have been shown to train attention, increase self-regulation and foster integration. With this training, we are more able to focus our attention on an object or activity and notice whatever arises. Mindfulness and Acceptance and Commitment Training help counter distraction and develop awareness and acceptance strategies to deal with the challenges we experience every day. Being able to build sustained attention, selective control and increase flexibility allows our brains to shift from default absence to active presence. We are more able to engage in life, be present with our friends and families, and learn strategies to live life in line with our values.
